This website was launched on October 23, 2015, which was Matthew Mirabal’s 37th birthday. For the past 16 years Matthew has spent his birthday in a Colorado prison due to a wrongful conviction. Over the years he has navigated the post-conviction appeals process and worked to be heard by the Colorado courts, all to no avail. This website has been created to get Matt’s story out into the public sphere, in support of his current effort to be granted a retrial and ultimately, exoneration.
On October 22, 1999, Matthew Mirabal was arrested for a murder he did not commit. Nine months later, in July of 2000, in Boulder County, CO, Matthew was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to the mandatory minimum sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole. Over the past 16 years, Matthew has never had the opportunity to tell his story, until now. Through this website Matthew is claiming his voice and sharing his story.
Matt is currently in an appeals process to be granted a retrial due to new evidence — another man’s confession to the crime. We will post updates on the blog regarding that process as events unfold. The blog also contains posts that Matt has written about his life in prison – a glimpse into his world, for those of us who are naive to prison life.
We invite you to read Matt’s story and explore the information on this website. On behalf of Matthew, we express our gratitude to you for taking the time to devote some of your compassion, consciousness, heart and energy to hearing his voice. Please share this website with others as you feel inclined and please contact us if you have any guidance or support to offer in the way of legal services or other means of facilitating the process of exoneration.
